The internal combustion engine has a heat exchanger (4) for heating of the engine oil by the temperature of the exhaust gases and is installed in the oil sump (3). An exhaust flap is provided in the exhaust pipe (5) and a branch (8) with a connecting pipe is tapped in front of the exhaust flap in the outlet direction and directs the exhaust gases (7) to the heat exchanger. An exhaust return pipe (9) leads from the heat exchanger to a region of the exhaust pipe behind the exhaust flap.
