PURPOSE: A front obstacle detecting apparatus is provided to timely carry out an automatic braking action by detecting a front obstacle which interrupts the traveling of the vehicle. CONSTITUTION: A front obstacle detecting apparatus includes a vehicle speed detecting device(7). A distance calculating device(5) is provided to calculate the distance between a vehicle and an obstacle positioned at a front of the vehicle based on data detected by a wave receiving device(1). An overlapping value calculating device(6) is provided to calculate the overlapping value between the vehicle and the object based on the data detected by the wave receiving device(1). A front obstacle determining device(8) is provided to determine whether or not the object detected by the wave receiving device(1) is a front obstacle. If the object is determined as the front obstacle, an automatic braking device is operated.
