A protein which is an aminoketone asymmetric reductase acting on 1-2-methylaminopropiophenone to form d-pseudoephedrine and having the following physicochemical properties; and a nucleic acid encoding this protein: substrate: 1-2-methylaminopropiophenone; optimum pH value: 8.1; optimum temperature: 55 DEG C; coenzyme: NADP; and molecular weight: homotetramer of about 28500 Da.
