PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently purify HC desorbed from a HC adsorbent at a relatively low temperature. SOLUTION: In this exhaust emission control device of an engine, an HC adsorbing catalyst 27 containing an HC adsorbent for adsorbing HC in exhaust gas, and desorbing the adsorbed HC with a temperature rise, an oxygen storage material for occluding oxygen when the oxygen concentration in exhaust emission gas is high and discharging the occluded oxygen according to lowering of the oxygen concentration, and an oxidation catalyst for oxidizing HC desorbed from the HC adsorbent is disposed in an exhaust passage 22. The exhaust emission control device is provided with oxygen concentration control means formed by an air fuel rato control means 43 for controlling the oxygen concentration in exhaust emission in the upstream of the HC adsorbing catalyst so that oxygen is released from the oxygen storage material in the operating condition where HC is desorbed from the HC adsorbent. |
