PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an imidazole compound in one step reaction without using an acidic substance. SOLUTION: This method for producing the imidazole compound represented by the general formula (2) (R<1> , R<2> and R<3> are each the same or different and each denotes H, a 1 to 8C aliphatic hydrocarbon group, a 5 to 7C cycloalkyl or phenyl) comprises subjecting a 1,2-diamine compound represented by the general formula (1) (R<1> , R<2> and R<3> are the same as above) and formamide to a gaseous phase catalytic reaction in the presence of a catalyst having dehydration and dehydrogenation abilities.
