The invention relates to a process for the production of nuclear halogenated alkoxyaryl isocyanates of the general formula in which R represents aryl which may be optionally substituted by alkyl, haloalkyl, halogen, nitro and/or nitrile, R<SP>1</SP> represents alkyl or cycloalkyl, Hal represents chlorine or bromine and m, n and z represent the numbers 1, 2 or 3 (the sum of m+n+z cannot exceed the number of replaceable hydrogen atoms) in which an alkoxyaryl isocyanate of the general formula (in which the sum of m + n + 1 must not exceed the number of hydrogen atoms replaceable in the aryl group) is reacted with a chlorinating or brominating agent at -10‹ to 140‹ C. The reaction may be effected in the presence of a solvent and a catalyst may be used to accelerate the reaction. The reaction is generally carried out with elementary chlorine or bromine but reagents which split off halogen such as phosphorus pentachloride or sulphuryl chloride may also be employed. |
