PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external electronic flash control system for a small-sized inexpensive camera by eliminating the need for a camera-side dimming control circuit, etc., by previously incorporating lighting control data on a dedicated external electronic flash in the camera side and performing arithmetic control over dimming from the camera body side. SOLUTION: The data on the dedicated external electronic flash to be mounted are stored in a circuit of the camera. Once information on the distance to a subject is obtained through distance detection, a control time is calculated from the stored data and a lighting trigger signal and a lighting stop signal are generated. In this arithmetic process, the data are compressed to make the relation between the guide number and control time nearly linear and find a compression control time and the time is expanded to find the control time.
