PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the stillness while opening and closing a valve by pushing a valve steam without bias. SOLUTION: Valve lifters 35, 36 are formed with spherically projected contact portions 47, 48 engageable with stem ends 20, 21 which are disposed inside followers 45, 46. The contact portions 47, 48 are brought into point-contact with the stem ends 20, 21 at a point in the vicinity of the center of the stem ends 20, 21, i.e., the position approximately the same as the center of the valve stems 15, 16. This makes the contact portions 47, 48 continuously add the pressing force to the stem ends 20, 21 in the vicinity of the center of the stem ends 20, 21 even when the valve lifters 35, 36 are inclined while being held in sliding contact with cams 33, 34, thereby suppressing valve-cocking and improving the stillness of the engine.
