In a system comprising an induction machine (120, Fig 5) with a stator and rotor, the stator has a plurality of phase windings 1'-34', an inverter has a plurality of solid state switches with appropriate controls and has the same number of phases as the induction machine, the inverter is connected to selectively energise the windings and a programmable microprocessor (108) is operatively connected to the inverter and includes a program for controlling the inverter, the program including operating the induction machine using pole phase modulation. The microprocessor further includes a program having steps for controlling the inverter by vector control. Vector control arrangements are described (Figs 6-8. The inverter may be PWM controlled. A position sensor may provide position indication of the relative position of the stator and rotor. The induction machine may be a motor or generator and may be used in a motor vehicle as a starter/alternator. |
