PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal head, which enables power savings for allowing high-quality printing to be performed even if low electric power energy is supplied to a heating resistor, and a manufacturing method therefor. SOLUTION: This thermal head is provided with an upper heat insulating layer 13a which is formed on a top surface of a radiating substrate 11, the heating resistors 15 which are formed on a top surface of the layer 13a, a plurality of feeder bodies 16a and 16b which are connected to the heating resistors 15 so as to form a heating part 15a in a part of the heating resistor 15, and a protective layer 17 which covers at least surfaces of the heating resistors 15 and those of the feeder bodies 16a and 16b. The layer 13a is composed of a polyimide resin, and a lower heat insulating layer 13b equal in quality of material to the layer 13a is formed on an under surface of the radiating substrate 11. Accordingly, heat stored in the radiating substrate 11 during printing is not rapidly radiated by the layer 13b even if the radiating substrate 11 is mounted on a heat sink 8. This enables provision of the thermal head which can save electric power while preventing a deterioration in printing quality even if the low electric power energy is supplied to the heating resistor 15.
