PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method for producing 2-n-butyl-5-nitrobenzofuran. SOLUTION: This method comprises, according to the reaction formulas, the steps of reacting salicylaldehyde (1) with anα-bromocaproic alkyl ester (2) to form a 2-(2'-formylphenoxy)caproic alkyl ester (3), nitrating the compound (3) to form a 2-(2'-formyl-4'-nitrophenoxy)caproic alkyl ester (4), hydrolyzing the compound (4) to form 2-(2'-formyl-4'-nitrophenoxy)caproic acid (5), subjecting the compound (5) to cyclization/decarbonation reaction to obtain the objective 2-n-butyl-5-nitrobenzofuran (6). By this method, the objective compound can be easily obtained in high yield without byproduct isomer formation.
