PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a deodorant and an agent for suppressing formation of isovaleric acid, useful e.g. as a cosmetic having excellent deodorizing effect and high safety owing to the activity to continuously suppress the generation of discomfortable body smell without killing the indigenous bacteria on the skin. SOLUTION: The deodorant and the isovaleric acid formation suppressing agent are composed of essential oils or essential oil components selected from ginger oil, immortelle oil, sandalwood oil, anis oil, fennel oil, pimentoberry oil, cinnamon oil, laurel oil, thyme oil, spike lavender oil, basil oil, coriander oil, citronella oil, melisse oil, geranium oil, palmarosa oil, dill seed oil, orange Valencia, lime oil, lemon oil, celery herb oil, lemongrass oil, litsea cubeba oil, vervena oil, angelica seed oil, copaiba oil, origanum oil, citral, limonene, linalool and anethol.
