PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for driving a plasma display panel in which good display characteristics are obtained by improving the reliability of a selection operation, preferably the contrast is improved and the difference in the driving characteristics by light emission colors is absorbed. SOLUTION: In an electric discharge cell where the discharge start threshold voltage between surface electrodes is 250 V and the discharge start voltage between the opposing electrodes is 350 V when a large number of activated particles exist in the discharging space, the final potential Vps of a predischarge pulse Pps is set to 400 V and the potential Vpc of a predischarge pulse Ppc is set to 0 V. When the voltage of the pulse Pps rises to exceed 250 V, which is the discharge start threshold voltage, weak discharge is generated between scanning electrodes and maintaining electrodes. Having completed the above operation and when the voltage of the pulse Pps exceeds 350 V, which is the discharge start threshold voltage between the opposing electrodes, weak discharge is generated between the scanning electrodes and data electrodes because many activated particles created by the discharge between the surface electrodes exist in the discharge space.
