PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a dyeing composition having excellent color and retention as a hair coloring substance without using an oxidizing agent such as hydrogen peroxide or an enzyme system for color development. SOLUTION: The dyeing composition comprises a coloring substance precursor selected from compounds containing at least one aromatic ring containing at least two hydroxy groups supported by two adjacent carbon atoms of an aromatic ring, a para- or ortho-type oxidation base selected from aromatic amines and a chemical catalyst system containing a first component selected from Mn(II) and/or Zn(II) salt and oxide and a second component selected from an alkali hydrogencarbonate and an alkaline earth metal hydrogencarbonate in a physiologically acceptable medium and has a fixed ratio of the first component to the second component.
