PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording device and a selection method for a recording head characteristic data which can be properly tread under various circumstances with regards to the characteristic data of the recording heads. SOLUTION: This recording device judges whether the characteristic data of the recording heads mounted in the recording device exists or not in the EEPROM of the recording head, or the EEPROM of the recording device or a host. Based on the result of the judgment, the characteristic data of the recording heads is input from these memories or the host in accordance with a predetermined priority. The propriety of the characteristic data is judged each time the characteristic data of the recording heads is input in accordance with the predetermined priority. Either the characteristic data of the recording heads or the characteristic data of the average recording heads stored in a different recording medium provided at the recording device is selected in accordance with the result of the discrimination or the result of the judgment.
