The sensors are laid out in a spatial matrix in m planes each with n different axially spaced sensor positions. Their outputs are grouped in families by position and by plane and the binary outputs of the sensors are subjected to processing by logic circuits in such a way that when two or more than two of these outputs exceed a given threshold level, the alarm/protection system is only triggered when the two sensors are in a minimum, predetermined size family. False triggerings by transients is prevented.
