PURPOSE: An apparatus for detecting the consumption amount of a welding wire which is capable of recognizing the consumption amount of the wire in case of continuous welding using robot or dedicated machine during automatic arc welding is provided. CONSTITUTION: In a welding wire consumption amount detecting apparatus for supplying a welding wire coiled on a wire roll by rotation of a wire feeding motor and detecting the consumption amount of the wire, the apparatus for detecting the consumption amount of the welding wire comprises a light emitting diode (LED)(6b) that is installed at one side of a rotating plate(6a) a part of which is cutout so that the rotating plate(6a) is rotated along with shaft of a support rotating plate being rotated together with the wire feeding motor, and that emits light to the outside; a photocell(6c) correspondingly installed to receive light of the light emitting diode (LED)(6b); a comparator(6d) for conversion outputting sine waves outputted from the photocell(6c) in square waves; and a counter(6e) for counting the square waves to monitor welding cycle of the wire so that the wire consumption amount is detected as the counted value, and the consumption of the welding wire is given a warning.
