A method of transmitting and receiving e-mail messages which allows increased personal expression of the sender to be seen or heard by the recipient. In a transmitting portable communication terminal 1, characters are inputted 2 (a-1) to form character data for an e-mail message. Additional expression data in inputted 3 (a-2), the additional expression data giving a variation on the respective characters of the character data. In one embodiment, the additional expression data relates to a character size, character colour or character font in which the e-mail characters are to be displayed. In another embodiment the additional expression data is voice characterizing data which adds tone, accent, stress or intonation to the characters of the e-mail message for when it is reproduced using a voice generator at the receiver terminal. In this embodiment the additional expression data may be input by the sender using a microphone 3. Transmission data 4 is generated by linking and converting the character data with the additional expression data. The transmission data is transmitted as e-mail (a-4) to the recipient. In a receiving portable terminal 6 the transmission data is received (b-1). The character data and additional expression data are then regenerated 8 (b-2) from the transmission data. The characters of the character data are then displayed on a screen 9 according to the additional expression data according to the desire of the sender. In another embodiment the receiver terminal reproduces the e-mail character audibly using a voice generator 11 applying the additional voice expression data. |
