PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To record a high quality image by preventing influences of a cockling or satellite, etc., when an image is to be recorded by means of a multi-pass for executing a reciprocating scanning operation of an ink jet recording head. SOLUTION: When the recording head having a plurality of nozzles and a recording medium are relatively moved to record an image on the recording medium by the multi-pass, whether the image density is more than a predetermined value or not is judged (S5). The image to be judged as the image density being more than the predetermined value is recorded by the reciprocating scanning of the recording head. While the image to be judged as the density being less than the predetermined value is recorded by only one way scanning of the recording head.
