Alkaline xanthogenate of formula: S where R is 1-5C alkyl and M is ROC-SM alkali metal, is prepd by reaction of a 1-5C monohydroxy aliphatic alcohol (ethyl, isopropyl, amyl) with an alkali metal hydroxide and a stoichiometric excess of 50-250% of CS2. Prevents formation of by-products (thiocarbonates and sulphides) and gives high yields in short reaction times. The product is used in flotation of ores (metal sulphides) in mining. |
