In a method of processing video into an encoded bitstream in which the encoded bitstream is intended to be sent over a WAN to a device, the processing of the video results in the bitstream (a) representing the video in a vector graphic format with quality labels which are device independent, and also (b) being decodable at the device to display, at a quality determined by the resource constraints of the device, a vector graphics based representation of the video. The quality labels are derived from perceptual significances assigned to contours defining a particular image feature and the labels indicate the position of a given contour in a hierarchy of layers allowing scalable contour coding of an image. This allows a display device to generate a contour representation of the video at a quality level commensurate with the display capabilities of the device by selection of the appropriate hierarchy layers. |
