Distributed computing using wireless mobile devices

Described is a means for allowing computing tasks to be (optionally parallelised and) distributed over a network of wireless devices, for example mobile telephones or PDA's. The tasks are carried out during free CPU cycle time and may be distributed via a central scheduler computer or the scheduling program may itself be distributed over the network of devices. Redundant devices may be allocated to each task to provide a backup mechanism. The cost of carrying out the task may be billed from the customer requesting it and credited amongst the owners of the devices carrying out the task.
