PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure winding up together with prevention of breakage at a screw portion and beret capping as compared with conventional ways of cap ping. SOLUTION: A screw capper 1 comprises a rotatory body 3 which conveys containers 2 and a capping head 5 which tighten a screw cap 4 on to the mouth of the container. The capping head is equipped with a chuck 31 for holding the cap, a motor 32 for turning the chuck, a cam mechanism 33 for moving the chuck up and down and an air cylinder 34 which applies load to the chuck. The air cylinder functions by means of a control device 35 so as to control the load to become zero during a period from the start of tightening to a point where the turn of screw tightening exceeds the turn of load changing for the chuck, and to apply load to the chuck by means of the control device 35 when the turn of screw tightening for the chuck is found to exceed the turn of load changing.
