An automotive passenger restraint system comprises a seatbelt and an electric driving means, preferably an electric motor, for protracting and retracting the seatbelt, a seat belt buckle sensor for detecting attachment and detachment of the seatbelt about the occupant and control means including a seatbelt protraction detection means. The control means has a plurality of functions whereby it controls the protraction and retraction motor in response to many sensor inputs including the seatbelt buckle sensor and seatbelt protraction sensor. The control means has a normal power consumption mode which allows full functionality of the system and a power-saving mode which only allows a minimum required number of functions of the system. The control means selects a power-saving mode if the buckle is detached for longer than a predetermined time period, and resumes a normal power mode if either seatbelt protraction is detected or seatbelt attachment is sensed. |
