PURPOSE: To improve the luminous efficiency of a light-emitting element by making that the light emitted from a luminous material layer does not become an invalid light as much as possible. CONSTITUTION: (a) A positive electrode 6 and a pattern of a hole injection blocking layer 3 are formed on a substrate 1 in a stripe form in a rectangular shape of cross section. The surroundings of the positive electrode 6 and the pattern of the hole injection blocking layer 3 are enclosed by a luminous material layer 2. The outside of the luminous layer 2 is enclosed by a negative electrode 4. (b) Or a negative electrode 4 and a pattern of an electron injection blocking layer 10 are formed on a substrate 1 in a stripe form in a rectangular shape of cross section. The surroundings of the negative electrode 4 and the pattern of the electron injection blocking layer 10 are enclosed by a luminous material layer 2, and its outside is surrounded by a positive electrode 6. The light emitted at the hole/electron recombination layer 9 of the luminous material layer 2 held between the positive electrode 6 and the negative electrode 4 is taken out as a valid light 5 from the side end face 1a of the luminous material layer or from the top face 1e of the luminous material layer.
