3-Halogenomethylcephem compound of the formula (2) or its salt is obatined by deprotecting with phenol derivative a carboxylic acid protecting group at the 4-position of 7-amino-3-halogenomethylcephem compound of the formula (1) or its saltFurther 3-thiomethylcephem compound of the formula (4) or its salt is prepared by reacting 3-halogenomethylcephem compound of the formula (2) or its salt with thiol compound or its salt of the formula (3)wherein X1, R1, R2 and M are as defined in the specification.
