PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for producing a biodegradable polyester from a raw material containing cellulose such as a waste paper. SOLUTION: The raw material containing the cellulose is brought into contact with pressurized hot water to prepare a heat-treated material containing a hydrolyzate of the cellulose. A microorganism having the productivity of the polyester is then made to act on the resultant heat-treated material in an aqueous medium to produce the polyester.
