METHOD OF SEPARATING LAMELLA

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method using a laser beam for separating lamellae in a stroma of the eye while minimizing the heat of a corneal tissue. SOLUTION: This method of separating the lamellae in the stroma of the eye comprises determining a focal depth located in a relatively weak tissue in an interfacial layer between the lamellae in the stroma. Then, a laser beam can be focused so as to photodistrupt the stroma tissue and create a photodistruptive response. Then, a wavefront analysis technique is used to compare the photodistruptive response with a reference value and find an effective minimum energy level regarding the laser beam. The proper focal depth can be periodically verified by maintaining a birefringence reference using an ellipsometer. A flap for the corneal tissue can be made which can lift the lower stroma tissue to be exposed for surgical photodistruption after separating the lamellae.
