Higher hydroxy carboxylic nitrile prepn. Process comprises reacting epoxides (I) having at least 5C esp. 8-24C) in liquid phase with hydrocyanic acid while adding strong base(s) and/or cyanide ion forming compd(s) (esp. these are 0.1-10, in part. 1-5% by wt. of I) at -20 to 120 degrees C, opt. under press. Products are, esp. R, CHOH, CH(R2)CH, where R1 is aliph. residue (1-22C), R2 is H or aliph. residue (1-21C) R1 and R2 6-22C. Good yields are obtained. |
