PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition having a low threshold voltage and reduced change of a layer structure after exposure to a low temperature. SOLUTION: This pyridine compound is represented by general formula (1) [wherein, R1 and R2 are each a 3-24C linear or branched alkyl group which may be substituted with a halogen atom, or a 3-24C linear or branched alkenyl group which may be substituted with a halogen atom, with the proviso that at least one of R1 and R2 is the linear or branched alkenyl group which may be substituted with the halogen atom; Y1 is a single bond, a -O- group, a -COO- group, a -OCOO- group or a -C≡C- group; n is an integer of 0-4; and X1 is a halogen atom]. The liquid crystal composition contains the compound, and the liquid crystal element uses the composition.
