PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for continuous polymerization of polyethylene terephthalate(PET) having excellent heat stability, color and transparency at a low cost and a high productivity, without using an antimony, germanium, or titanium compound as a main component of the catalyst. SOLUTION: Polyethylene terephthalate is prepared by continuous polymerization using a polycondensation catalyst comprising, as a metal-containing component, at least one selected from the group consisting of aluminum and aluminum compounds, and comprising at least one selected from the group consisting of phenolic compounds.
