PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a welded part small in connection loss by eliminating an excessively heated state at a turning back position other than a fusion splicing part of a heating device. SOLUTION: In the optical fiber fusion splicing method including a process for fusion splicing by abutting the end face of two optical fibers 1, 1' and a heat-treating process for heating near the fusion spliced part 3 of the optical fibers; the heating device in the heat-treating process is composed of an electric discharge heating device having discharging electrodes 4 oppositely facing across the optical fibers; and the optical fibers 1, 1' are heated by moving the heating center position of the discharging electrodes 4 relatively against the optical fibers 1, 1', in the directions other than the Y and Z axes passing the fusion splicing part 3 in the Y-Z plane, which is formed with the perpendicular direction (Y axis direction) against the axial direction of the optical fibers (Z axis direction) and the oppositely facing direction of the discharging electrodes (X axis direction), and with the Z axis direction. |
