PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve reliability between a communication device and a media converter and efficiently perform maintenance of the devices or failure classification by transmitting/receiving a maintenance control frame comprising a maintenance data between the communication devices which are connected via the media converter provided for performing conversion between the different kinds of transmission medium. SOLUTION: A maintenance control frame 200 comprising a maintenance data 240 is transmitted and received between a communication device 10 corresponding to the maintenance control frame 200 and a media converter 20. The communication device 10 analyzes the maintenance data 240 in the maintenance control frame 200 transmitted from the media converter 20 and judges the condition of the media converter 20, that of line for a transmission media 40 or the like based on the result of the analysis. Then the communication device 10 acquires information stored in the media converter 20.
