PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical amplifier which enables a system to be automatically reset and uses a Raman amplification method that is capable of protecting an APSD function against malfunction and an optical multiplex transmission relay system where the optical amplifier is applied. SOLUTION: An optical amplifier employing a Raman amplification method is equipped with a Raman excitation light source which emits Raman rays, and a detection circuit which detects errors in monitoring (OSC) signals transmitted together with optical transmission signals. When bit errors in the monitoring (OSC) signals are detected by the detection circuit, the output power of the Raman rays emitted from the Raman excitation light source is controlled corresponding to the condition of bit errors. |
