A release mechanism of efficient construction and operation is provided to hold profile restraining air bag tethers (130, 230, 330, 430, 530, 630, 730, 830, 930, 1030, 1130, 1230) in a shortened operative condition under a first set of predetermined conditions and to extend such tethers (130, 230, 330, 430, 530, 730, 830, 930, 1030, 1130, 1230) under a second set of predetermined condidtions. The extension of the restraining tethers (130, 230, 330, 430, 530, 630, 730, 830, 930, 1030, 1130, 1230) may be carried out in conjunction with the delivery of an increased volume of inflating gas to the air bag cushion (120, 220, 320, 420, 520, 620, 720, 820, 920, 1020, 1120, 1220) utilizing a gas emitting inflator (140, 240, 340, 440, 540, 640, 740, 840, 940, 1040, 1140, 1240) in conjunction with a dynamic variable inflation device to effect delivery of a proper volume of inflation gas while releasing the tethers (130, 230, 330, 430, 530, 630, 730, 830, 930, 1030, 1130, 1230) from a restrained length condition.
