An implant insertion apparatus for guiding surgical instrumentation and facilitating insertion of surgical into an intervertebral space, having a retractor positionable with respect to adjacent vertebrae in the intervertebral space and an adjustable element mounted to the retractor. The adjustable element defines a longitudinal passageway dimensioned to guide the surgical instrument inserted therethrough, and the length of the adjustable element is variable to provide varying drilling depth for the implantation.
