<p>A safety-sheathed blood sampling needle (32) for use with a standard vacutainer. The needle (32) is housed in a protective hollow body (12) and held in place with a non-tensioned elastic band (38). The needle (32) may be extended outside the cover (12) for use without removing the cover assembly (10) from the needle (32), and may be locked into the use position with one hand. Moving the needle (32) into the use position tensions the elastic band (38). After the sample is taken, the needle (32) is unlocked and retracted back into the cover (12) by the elastic band (38). Upon such retraction, the element (22) used to extend the needle (38) is either concealed or disconnected to prevent accidental reuse of the needle (38).</p> |
