A multi-mode mobile station (16) is operable within a wireless communications network (10) that includes plural radio access networks (12, 14) having non-integrated air interface standards. Responsive to an incoming call/message (100), the wireless communications network locates (102) the mobile station currently being served through a first one (26(1)) of those radio access networks, and provides an indication that use of a second one (26(2)) of the radio access network is required in order to deliver the incoming call/message. The first radio access network then issues a redirection request (112) message instructing the mobile station to switch (114) over to the second radio access network. Responsive to a mobile station access (116) in the second radio access network, routing information (120) is provided to the wireless communications network to enable delivery (122) of the incoming call/message to the mobile station through the second radio access network.
