PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heater and a heat medium control method which prevent the inconvenience such as misjudge, etc., caused by the repetition of heat medium supply. SOLUTION: This heater is equipped with a heat medium tank (cistern 4), a circulation path (26, 26A, 26B, pipes 6 and 40), an air detection means (air sensor 46), a heat medium supply means (water supply pipe 48 and a valve 52), and a control means (a controller 60), and when the heat medium (water W, warm water 8) is not on a proper level (for example, a lower limit level L1 or higher) in a heat medium tank at start of operation, the heat medium supply and heat medium circulation are repeated, and the heat medium supply is continued until it comes to a proper level, by any one or two or more conditions among that air has not penetrated into the circulation path, that the heating operation is suspended for a specified time or over, and that the number of times of the supply of a heat medium is not more than the specified number of times, thus the troubles such as misjudge, etc., due to the repetition of heat medium supply is prevented.
