PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To exactly detect an original size with simple constitution. SOLUTION: Plural sensors 1 which detect the presence or absence of an original on original platen glass 12 are arranged below the original platen glass 12 in respective positional relations. The first decision results decided from the outputs of the respective sensors 1 when the detected value of the angle of an original platen cover 13 with respect to the original platen glass 12 attains a prescribed angle and the second decision results decided from the output of the respective sensors 1 at the point of the time the decision result by the output of any sensor among the sensors 1 of which the first decision results are the 'absence' of the original invert to the 'presence' of the original are compared and the presence or absence of the original is decided. The original size is detected in accordance with the presence or absence of the original.
