PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical communications system that utilizes a surface light-emitting type semiconductor laser device chip capable of reducing an operating voltage and an oscillation threshold current as a light-emitting source and can improve the productivity of a laser chip module and the overall yield of a manufacturing process. SOLUTION: Assuming that the number of laser devices arrayed in an optical communications system is n (n: positive integer) and that the number of laser devices not functioning is c (c: integer in a range of 0<=c<n), a light source module constituted by (n-c) laser devices is used.
