PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for recording and reproducing monitor video data, whose S/N deterioration is small by shortening the operating time of a VTR, and reducing the deterioration of magnetic tapes or heads or mechanisms. SOLUTION: In this monitor video data recording/reproducing unit for storing video signals continuously generated over a long time on a magnetic tape, the video signal from a video camera is converted into a digital signal through an A/D circuit 12; and compression/encoded by a compression encoding/decoding circuit 3, and compressed on a time axis by a time axis compressing circuit 100 constituted of a first memory 4, a second memory, an SCSI controller 5, and an HDD 7, and recorded via an I/F circuit 14 on the magnetic tape of a VTR 9 of D-VHS. The video data from the compression encoding/decoding circuit 3 are compressed on the time axis by the time axis compressing circuit 100, so that the recording time of the video data on the magnetic tape can be made shorter then the recording time. Therefore, it is necessary to only intermittently record the video data to the magnetic tape of the VTR 9, a magnetic tape recorder can be used for a general households, and generation of tape damages are reduced. |
