PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which does not produce coloring in a black display state and has an excellent display quality level in a wide field angle. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is provided with a polarizer 7 and analyzer 8 whose polarizing axis direction are orthogonal with each other, a liquid crystal layer 1 in which liquid crystal molecules are in a bend alignment, two electrode substrates 3b and 3u which hold the liquid crystal layer 1, and first optical retardation plates 4b and 4u each consisting of an optical medium which has negative optical uniaxiality having a principal axis in a hybrid alignment. The liquid crystal display device is further provided with second optical retardation plates 5b and 5u which has optical biaxiallity or positive optical uniaxiality, and has an in-plane optical retardation with respect to the surfaces of the electrode substrate 3b and 3u. The direction 15 of the in-plane optical retardation of the second optical retardation plates 5b and 5u and the orthogonal projection direction 11 of the optical axis of the liquid crystal molecules to any one of two electrode substrate 3b and 3u, are almost orthogonal. |
