PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop water soluble flux which enables the prevention of unplating when used for plating on an industrial scale, and enables the obtain ment of hot dip zinc - aluminum alloy plating having a good surface appearance, and to provide a hot dip zinc - aluminum bath composition optimum for the use of the same flux. SOLUTION: The flux consists of one or more selected from the chlorides of alkali metal elements and the fluorides of alkali metal elements. The molar ratio between the chlorides of the alkali metal elements and the fluorides of the alkali metal elements lies in the range of 1:2 to 4:1. As the alkali metal elements, either sodium or potassium is used. As the chlorides of the alkali metals, potassium chloride is used, and, as the fluorides of the alkali metal elements, potassium fluoride is used.
