PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a batch type polymerization method capable of low-cost and high-yield production of PET excellent in thermostability, hue, and transparency, using a catalyst not containing as its main ingredient an antimony compound, a germanium compound, or a titanium compound. SOLUTION: This is a batch type method for producing polyethylene terephthalate from terephthalic acid or its derivatives and ethylene glycol by esterification reaction or interesterification reaction, and liquid phase polycondensation reaction in a plurality of chemical reactors. The polycondensation catalyst in this method contains one or more metal-containing ingredients selected from the group consisting of aluminum and/or its compounds and also contains one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of phenolic compounds.
