PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the black level, the dynamic range, and the color reproducing property of a projection type video display unit. SOLUTION: The projection type video display unit which makes light emitted from a light source means 5 with a quantity of light according to electric power supplied to the light source means 5 incident on a light valve means, and projects an image according to an input video signal formed on the image forming surface of the light valve means on a screen through an optical system, is provided with a first calculating means 2 which calculates the area of a video projected on the screen, a photometric means 1 which measures illuminance near the video projected on the screen, a second calculating means 3 which calculates a black level correction value on the basis of the area of the video calculated by the first calculating means 2 and the illuminance measured by the photometric means 1, and a light source electric power control means 4 which controls electric power supplied to the light source means 5 according to the black level correction value calculated by the second calculating means 3.
