PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a coating composition comprising a modified polyhydroxypolyacrylate different from a known compound in aspects of a remarkably low viscosity possessed thereby. SOLUTION: This polyhydroxy compound-containing coating composition is obtained by using a polyhydroxy compound having 2-10 wt.% hydroxy group content and 250-80,000 mPa.s viscosity at 23 deg.C and produced by carrying out free radical polymerization of a mixture of (a) 100 pts.wt. of olefinically unsaturated monomers containing at least 1 wt.% of a monomer having alcoholic hydroxy groups in the presence of (b) 5-500 total pts.wt., which may be present at the beginning of the reaction or added during the reaction, of a cyclic compound and (c) 2-300 pts.wt., which may be present at the beginning of the reaction or added during the reaction, of a polyhydric alcohol having 62-1,000 molecular weight in the coating composition in which a binder is composed of a curing agent and the polyhydroxy compound.
