PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ignition device for an internal combustion engine for improving the ignition performance of an engine and preventing a misfire. SOLUTION: In the multiple ignition device in which the discharged energy on the positive side and the discharged energy on the negative side are approximate to each other, the energy accumulated in a capacitor 12 and the energy accumulated in an energy accumulating coil 11 are fed to the primary coil 14 at the ignition timing, and after the high voltage for ignition is applied to the secondary coil 15, transistors Q1 and Q2 are alternately connected/ disconnected for a prescribed discharge period and multiply discharged. At the time, the current carrying period of the transistor Q1 is set according to the constant of the energy accumulating coil 11 and the primary coil 14 so that the discharged energy on the positive side of the secondary coil 15 and the discharged energy on the negative side are approximate to each other. As a result, the discharged current on the positive side of the secondary coil 15 and the discharged current on the negative side are well-balanced, and such a situation is avoided as the current value on one side is smaller than the current value on the other side.
