PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a carbon material having a high specific surface area by a simple operation and more efficiently, instead of those conventional methods for manufacturing carbon material having high specific surface area by heat treating a woody material added and mixed with chemicals such as zinc chloride and phosphoric acid or by activating a heat treated and carbonized woody material at a high temperature of 900-1200 deg.C and under flowing of steam or carbon dioxide for long time. SOLUTION: This method for manufacturing a carbon material having a high specific surface area, is characterized in that a woody material is heated at 700-850 deg.C while flowing steam, preferably a non-oxidizing gas containing 5-80 mol % of steam at a space velocity of 100-10,000/hr. |
