PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the power consumption of an image reader and to enhance its operability. SOLUTION: This invention provides a control method for the image reader that is set to a usual mode where required power is supplied for usual operations and set to a power-saving mode where the supply of power is restricted, and the method includes a prescribed condition discrimination step (S13) of discriminating whether or not a preset prescribed condition is obtained during the usual mode, a state discrimination step (S16) of discriminating a state of the image reader when the prescribed condition discrimination step discriminates that the condition reaches the prescribed condition, and an inhibit step (S16) of inhibiting switching from the usual mode to the power-saving mode depending on the state discriminated by the state discrimination step.
